Kiwi Information Report

We have been learning to write information reports. Here is mine.

Kiwis

Kiwis are a bird that are native to New Zealand. There are 5 species of kiwi. There is the brown kiwi, great spotted, little spotted, Rowi and Tokoeka

Appearance

Kiwi are small, brown feathered, flightless birds. Kiwi can’t fly because their wings are 5 cm long so it doesn’t help them fly.  Kiwi weigh about 3kg but the female kiwi weighs a bit more than the male kiwi. Kiwi have feathers like hair. They have a long beak with 2 nostrils at the end of the beak.

Diet

Kiwi are omnivores. They like to eat slugs, snails, berries, insects, seeds and spiders.

Habitat

Kiwi are nocturnal. They live in forests, borrow, logs, hollows and underground.

Breading

A female kiwi lays one egg per year. An egg takes 80 days to hatch. The male kiwi looks after the egg.

Threats

Kiwi are endangered birds because of stoats, weasels, rats, possums and cats. There used to be 5 million kiwi but today there are only about sixty thousand.

You can only find kiwi in New Zealand.  Kiwi can live for up to 50 years.  Only 5% of the kiwi that hatch survive to an adult. Kiwi have a very poor vision but they have a very good sense of smell.
